Star Havoc is an overhead space combat game with furious 1 or 2 player action. Duel with friends and foes in massive battles between several alien races. An expert artificial intelligence is also awaiting a challenge. Nearly all aspects of this game are easily customized with a simple text editor and a graphics program. The year is 2499, the verge of the new century. Fifty years ago, humans discovered intelligent life far from Earth for the first time . The mighty armada of StarFleet (the military branch of the Human race) encountered legions of alien spacecraft around the planet Sentiar, and to avoid a conflict devastating to both sides, agreed to a hasty peace accord. Both races were incredibly powerful, as the humans were incredibly technologically advanced, and the Sentia (as they came to be called) infinitely numerous. Although cautious of each other's power, they formed an edgy alliance driven by hunger for both territory and wealth. The Sentia are a fascinating species. These massive free-floating creatures live in the vast regions of space itself. Their kind, being the only species ever recorded to send "infantry" to a space conflict, has lived for eons flying around space, giving them a huge advantage over the other races. The Sentia being starts as a single spore, drifting around the regions of space, propelled by intermittent cosmic rays. When it first alights upon an asteroid or other piece of matter it begins to feed. The Sentia grub will feed voraciously, acting entirely on instinct. This massive binge causes the broodlings to grow up to the size of small moons. From this point on the Sentia require no additional food, and therefore shrink with age. Sentia corpses have been found on planets at the size of a small bus. This alliance was quickly joined by the ruthless Xagor race, equipped with devastating spacecraft and an incredible variety of weaponry. These Xagor creatures, if they can be called creatures at all, are so enhanced with robotics that they bear no resemblance to any other known life form. These mechanized beasts show no mercy toward their enemy, and fight until death. The alliance has already smashed through thousands of planets and dozens of races, which are now merely notes in a general's history book. About 20 years ago, several small races, observing the encroachment of Alliance fleets near their homeworlds, banded together in an effort to resist the oncoming armies. They turned away the initial wave of Alliance "Friendship" Fleets with a dashing display of camaraderie ---- the first time any successful retaliation against the Alliance was made. At that time, the moderate military might of the Bog'ei was the glue that held together this band of hodgepodged races that call themselves the Happy Concern (a bad translation). The members of the Happy Concern at that time were Mawmon, Bo'gei, and Aktun. In time, they were joined by the joyriding Ekani, the loyal Toras (who stole and retrofitted old StarFleet cargo ships to give themselves a jump on space travel development, as they were the only non-spacefaring race to join the Happy Concern), the botanical Vuvjil, and the dutiful Hagmu (who were formerly employed by the Alliance to dispose of intergalactic waste). A major turning point of the war recently occurred when the Pirpho, a reasonably powerful race, decided to join the Happy Concern instead of a taking a lucrative position in the Alliance. A newly formed division has arisen to complicate the matter. The Gazi (or Galactic Socialist) Party is a recently created Human faction intending to remedy the failures of the regime of StarFleet. Part of their doctrine promotes the Human species as genetically superior to other species, and the elimination of inferior species from the Solar system. They preach a revival of an antique human dialect, and follow the motto of "Ein Volk, ein Weld, ein Fuhrer". Their doctrine has taken hold on several planet systems, and they have already adopted many old Human space craft designs for current combat use. While not associated with either the Alliance or the Happy Concern, they remain a quiet threat to the balance of the universe. The battle rages on. Note: this story was added in as an afterthought. Star Havoc registration is
After we finish the Duncan and Squire game, it will be almost a trivial matter to program a 3D Star Havoc. The only real work that would need to be done is making the art (with innumerable special effects, of course!) and programming networking. Wouldn't a massive 20 player network game sound fun? Will we keep the style? Will we keep the same ships? Will we add a real story? We will definitely keep the same style of combat on a 2D plane, and simply add 3D ships (and a 3d perspective). We will have the ability of making even more awesome particle effects, absolutely everywhere, hopefully making it one of the flashiest games ever created. We like the variety of ships in Star Havoc but will definitely add many more, and may remove a few. As for a single player (or multi player?) story line, we're not sure yet. Perhaps an open-ended campaign? But all must wait until the Duncan and Squire game nears completion. |
